NPACI

The National Partnership for Advanced Computational Infrastructure (NPACI) is one of two national partnerships established by NSF in its Partnership for Advanced Computational Infrastructure program, a successor of the Supercomputer Centers program. The lead institution for NPACI is the University of California at San Diego and the affiliated San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC). The main goal of the partnership is to establish a national computing infrastructure, including: (1) hardware that ranges from small to large supercomputers; (2) data resources such as digital libraries and data repositories; (3) networking to link up the various resources; and (4) software to manage the resources and provide advanced programming environments. This national infrastructure will enable scientists and engineers to conduct innovative research on computationally challenging large scale scientific and engineering problems.

The University of Maryland is a major partner of NPACI, involved heavily in four thrust areas: Programming Tools and Environments ( Saltz ), Data Intensive Computing ( Saltz and JaJa ), Resources ( JaJa ), and Earth Systems Science ( JaJa , Saltz and Townshend).
