All the major research programs of the Institute are
conducted through the various UMIACS laboratories, each lab being
directed by a group of faculty and having its unique computing infrastructure.
Computational Linguistics and Information Processing |
This lab promotes research in machine translation,
multi-lingual information retrieval, information mediation, and natural
language translation. |
Computer Vision Laboratory |
Widely regarded as one of the top computer vision labs
in the world, involves major programs in image understanding, computational
modeling of humans in action, image analysis, and image and video
databases. |
Global Land Cover Facility |
This lab involves faculty from Geography and Computer
Science working together to address critical global and regional scale
terrestrial Earth Systems Science issues using remotely sensed imagery. |
Internationally known since its founding in 1983. This
lab supports research in information visualization, interface design,
educational technologies and evaluation techniques. |
Keck Laboratory for the Computational Modeling of Visual Movement |
Funded by a Keck award, this lab includes a network
of sensors and computers that are simultaneously used to view various
human actions and interactions, and automatically generate 3-D models
of those actions. |
Language and Media Processing Laboratory |
This lab integrates research in natural language processing
with intelligent document image understanding, video analysis and
multimedia retrieval. |
Laboratory for Parallel and Distributed Computing |
This lab supports research in parallel and distributed
systems, with an emphasis on software environments, algorithms,
and data-intensive applications. |
Maryland Information and Network Dynamics Laboratory |
This lab provides a focal point for defining, developing,
evaluating and deploying new information technologies. Operating in
partnership with Industry, in collaboration with other Universities,
and in cooperation with Federal Agencies, the MIND Lab is organized
to address key research, education and technology challenges, and
to create new opportunities. |
Parallel Commodity Hardware and Software Machine |
The PCHASM Laboratory,
consisting of a network of commodity personal computers, seeks to
apply ideas developed in the high-end scientific computing area to
commercial applications including databases and mixed media. |
Perceptual Interfaces and Reality Laboratory |
This lab is concerned with extending human computer
interaction to use all modalities of human perception and to create
virtual and augmented versions of the world that are perceptually
identical to the human with the real world. |
